Under Takirau
Takirau has several meanings in Maori. We like to think that
the ‘Moon of the 19th Night’ relates to the beautiful
reflections of the moon on the water of Takirau Bay at this
time. But maybe it refers to ‘embarkation’ of boats
from the pa site, or perhaps ‘to embrace 100-fold’
comes from a long forgotten local romantic story…
Under Takirau is a self contained apartment, beneath Takirau
House. Both look out over Takirau Bay, towards the sunset, and
the lights of the city in the distance.
Takirau Bay is our near-private beach nestled on the edge of
an ancient Pohutakawa reserve, and a short walk down a path
from the garden.
The apartment has a double bedroom, a small bunk room and a
spacious lounge. There is flexible use of these spaces to accommodate
various guest needs.
It has its own kitchen with dining area, and a bathroom with
shower, and washing machine.
The kitchen is well equipped (fridge, double hob and microwave,
but no stove or dishwasher).
It has two sunny patios, and there is a BBQ for guests' use.
The flat is enclosed within its own fenced garden. A path from
the garden leads to Takirau Bay and to the reserve. The Bay
is a great place for a swim, kayaking, fishing, relaxation,
and escape.
A short stroll away is Kennedy Point Vineyard. The Subritsky
Vehicular Ferry berths just around the corner. A little further
is Te Huruhi School, which becomes 'Jazz Central' during the
annual Waiheke Jazz Festival, and hosts many other Island events,
including the 'Junk to Funk' show.
